ByWeek 1 Tape General Review |

Encouragement

Positive Attitude: Maintained a positive demeanor throughout the game.
Resilience: Mature response after falling behind by 2 TDs.
Turnover Battle: We won the turnover battle by forcing 2 and generating 1 (on 4th down).
Competitiveness: This was a very winnable game against a good team. They had several large (90-120 lbs) but athletic players.
Correctable Mistakes: All errors made are easily fixable with coaching and commitment.

Areas for Improvement

Faster Start: Subpar blocking, Penalties, and Dropped Passes hurt us early
Third Down Conversions: More manageable downs and distances by avoiding TFLs and penalties
Snap Count Variety: We need to vary our snap count to keep the defense guessing. (Scott lacked confidence)
Blocking & Tackling Technique: Players are playing too high on both blocking and tackling. We need to lower our pads.
Pursuit and Finish: Pursuit needs to be consistent on both offense and defense. Always find someone to block; too much standing around and watching.
Tackling Fundamentals: Improve breaking down before tackles. Some were better than others, but none were consistently excellent.
Offensive Lineup and Blocking: Issues with alignment on offense, particularly with running and X/Y.
Consistency on Offense: We had good moments but were plagued by self-inflicted wounds (penalties, fumbles, dropped passes, missed assignments, etc.).

Group Review

Running Backs:
Alignment Issues: F and H were too close, leading to congestion and poor mesh points. F should be at 3.5 yards, and H at 7 yards from LOS in offset I formation.
Lack of Cutbacks: Aside from Blake’s TD and a small gain by Harrison, we didn’t see many cutbacks.
Ball Security: Good overall, with only one fumbled exchange that we recovered.
Passing Game:
Low Production: 5 pass attempts (all by Harrison), no completions, 1 INT.
Dropped Passes: 2 dropped passes.
Play Action Effectiveness: An ineffective run game led to their safeties not respecting our play action.
Play Repetition: Overuse of 'Z Slant H/F Out' without targeting H or F enough. QB kept it too often. This play is crucial to getting our backs in space and slowing their rush.
Outside Blocking:
Alignment and Stance Issues: X and Y were too far off the LOS and often in a "squatting" stance.
Blocking Assignments: Need to seal and invite inside pressure on outside runs.
Inside Blocking/Snapping:
Snapping: Clean snaps overall, except for one.
Inside Tackle Box: Only two tackles for loss inside the tackle box.
Engagement: Need to stay engaged even when the play is away.
Run Defense:
Containment: Controlled the outside run well, consistently forcing it inside.
D-Line Awareness: Need to keep an eye on the ball and shed blockers accordingly.
Tackling Fundamentals: Need to wrap up better.
Pass Defense:
First Half Struggles: Poor in the first half, improved in the second half (Harrison’s INT & Levi’s pass break up on 4th down).
Zone Coverage: They found gaps in our zone (behind S/W and in front of FS).

Player-Specific Observations

Harrison: Needs to step into throws instead of jump passing. Made several tackles but needs improvement in breaking down, keeping his head up, wrapping up, and delivering solid tackles instead of diving arm tackles.
Colt: Great first game. On the right trajectory, just needs to increase intensity.
Nate: Needs to keep his head up when blocking and tackling and work on holding the line. At LB, he should focus on where the ball is going, not where it has been.
Blake: Great vision on runs. Needs more preparation for FS. Improve as a blocker.
Jayson: Pops up out of stance without driving. Good chip blocking on routes but needs to stay locked in.
Abe: Solid for his first tackle game but needs to work on shuffling and staying square rather than flipping his hips too early.
Gabe: Did well finding someone to block and provided great snaps.
Sam: Needs to improve finding someone to block and work on his initial stance. Created pressure that led to Harrison’s INT.
Kellan: Good blocking and engagement.
Grant: Needs more confidence throwing. Tough player both taking and delivering hits.
Summers: Good, tough running, though he missed a tackle opportunity by going inside twice.
Yusef: Played well on defense after early adjustments. Needs to consistently hold the line or penetrate.
Levi: Needs to adjust his alignment to avoid interference with the mesh point. Great break on the ball for the 4th down pass break-up.
Hunter: Overall good performance but needs to avoid dropping to knees too quickly on tackles.
Isaac: Good for his first tackle game; quick to recover from mistakes.
Kopick: Needs to find someone to block every play and go 100%.
Perry: Good TFL/fumble near their goal line, solid penetration throughout the game.

Changes for Next Game
