Won the turnover battle. Forced 2, generated 1 (on 4th down)
A very winnable game we lost to a good team. Majority of their team was big 90-120lb but athletic.
All our mistakes are EASILY correctable with coaching and commitment
Room For Improvement
Converting on 3rd down (Dropped pass on first attempt. Penalty on second attempt)
Changing Snap Count
Played too high both when Blocking & Tackling
Inconsistent pursuit and finishing on both on O & D
Always find someone to block. There was a decent amount of standing around and watching
Breaking down prior to tackling (Some were better than others but no one was A+)
Where/How we lined up on offense (see running & outside blocking)
Consistency on Offense. We’d do a couple good things then self inflicted wounds (Penalty, Fumble, Dropped Pass, Missed Assignment, ETC)
Group Review
Running:
F & H were too close to each other. F is 3.5 yards and H is 7 yards from LOS for offset I.
This lead to congestion and poor mesh points.
With the exception of Blake’s TD, and a small gain by Harrison (negative 3 to positive 2) we never cut back.
Good ball security. Only one fumbled exchange, which we recovered
Passing:
5 pass attempts all game (all by Harrison) zero 👀 completions 1 INT
Dropped 2 passes
Due to our anemic run game, their Safeties never respected our Play Action
Ran ‘Z Slant H/F Out’ 6-8 times. 1 attempt to H or F. This play is how our backs get into space and slow down their rush.
Outside Blocking
X & Y were too far off the LOS and/or were in a “squatting” stance
Following the blocking assignments. Need to seal and invite inside pressure on outside runs.
Inside Blocking/Snapping
Clean snaps (except 1)
Only two TFL inside the tackle box
Need to stay engaged in the play especially when away from the play
Run Defense
Controlled the outside run. Consistently forced the play to the inside.
D line needs to keep an eye on the ball and shed accordingly
Need to WRAP up
Passing Defense
Very poor in the first half. Much better in the second half. See: Harrison INT & Levi’s Pass Break Up on 4th!
They found a gap in our zone (behind S/W and in front of FS)
Player Specific Observations:
Harrison: Needs to step into throws (no jump passes). Made a bunch of tackles but needs to improve at breaking down/keep his head up, wrap up, and lay the wood. Too many diving arm tackles
Colt: Played SUCH a good game for his first tackle football game. He’s on the right trajectory, just need to increase the intensity.
Nate: Keep his head up when blocking and tackling. Needs to work on holding the line. When playing LB, need to run to were the ball is going, not to where the ball has been or is.
Blake: Great vision on all his runs. Wasn’t prepared to play FS. Having him play LB during scrimmages helped his tackling but didn’t keep 17 players in front of him. Improve as a willing blocker
Jayson: Springs up out of stance but doesn’t drive block. Good chip block on his routes (just enough). Needs to lock in and stay locked in.
Abe: Played well considering it was his first tackle football game. Needs to work on his shuffle. Quick to flip his hip and run. (Don’t need that from SS)
Gabe: Good job finding some to block. Great snaps all game
Sam: Find someone to block at all times. Work on your initial ‘Line Stance’. Good penetration on D but needs to finish. Created the pressure that lead to Harrison’s INT!
Kellan: Good blocking, good engagement
Grant: More confidence in throwing. Such a tough kid, took a beating and delivered a beating. They found a hole in our zone (behind him but in front of our FS a couple times in Pass D)
Summers: Good tough running. Went inside on a couple tackles on (Missed one, made the other)
Yusef: Played very well on defense (Yusef responded well after V spoke to him early in the game about holding the line or knifing through)
Levi: Only played 2nd half. Lining up too close to the ball hurt our mesh point and his ability to showcase his skill set. Couple times he ran into the FB, other times the X/Y got blocked into the mesh point which was too close to the line. Also, missed a huge cut back. Great read and break on the ball for the 4th down pass break up!
Hunter: Overall played well. A couple times he was quick to drop to his knees and going to for the ankles when making a tackle. Could work on bringing a consistent 🔥
Isaac: Did very well. Especially considering it’s his for tackle game. Good block and decent tackling. Quick to play his hands on his head when a play didn’t go well
Kopick: Find someone to block every play. Let’s go 100% on snaps!
Perry: Nice TFL/fumble when backed up against their goal line. Good penetration all game
Changes:
Several Line Up Changes:
Yusef & Colt at QB (Harrison & Grant will still get snaps at QB)
Moving Blake to Strong LB
Moving Harrison & Grant to Strong D-End
Moving Sam to LG & FS
Moving Levi & Blake to Z (Mix them in at QB for keepers)
Two No Huddle Plays: Color = Z Slant H/F Out | Number = Fake H - Z Sweep Option
Z Slant H/F Out
Fake H - Z Sweep Option
Plan for the week:
Offense:
Defense: 2nd/3rd guy strips the ball
Need to work with specific position groups.
X,Y,Z
Outside Blocking & Catching
Need to engage as they come out of their stance
Two point stance if they are shading
LG & RG
Inside Blocking
C, Q, F, H
Exchange, Lead Block, Block in space, Fake, Spacing
Need to help Grant (Kellan & Yusef) gain confidence in throwing the ball
Encourage the Cutback (if they seal the edge, there is likely a Cutback)
Quarterback needs to start by looking at the backs to make sure they are in position and set before saying “Down”
FS
Back pedal, drift to deepest receiver, Keep 17 guys in front of you until they can’t pass
What do we want them to do with a player lines up wide (Get on same page with M & S)
SS & M
SS is responsible for a TIGHT X,Y,Z running short route
W & S
What do we want them to do with a player lines up wide (Get on same page with FS)
LE & RE
RT & LT
Game Day Changes:
Position Coaches watch your position and coach players when they come off the field
QB/C Exchange w/ throwing X Receiver between plays on sidelines
